A LITTLE VILLAGE IN THE PROVINCE OF SIENA, NEAR FLORENCE
BETTOLLE
It's a very little village on the hill near the tollgate Valdichiana.
HISTORY
The origin of Bettolle are very ancient indeed the area was lived since the etruscan civilisation, this village was called Betula which the meant is forest of birch. During the medieval age Bettolle was governed by the imperator Enrico II and called it as “Villa di Bettolle”(1014).
After that the village become a fief of the lords Cacciaconti from Sinalunga.
If it seems little and unknown actually in the past here lived many important authorities like the cardinal Sivlio Passerini (friend of Medici), the king Carlo V who took the village for the Medici family. Few years after the fief was annulled and Bettolle was annexed to the municipality of Sinalunga
WHAT TO VISIT?
There is an interesting church in the center of Bettolle called Chiesa di San Cristoforo, it's a really old building but was renovated many times until the eight hundred century. The building is on brick with a bell tower. Inside is little and armonious, there is a chapel where are some bronze panels from a local sculpture Nando Canuti.
Around the village there are many examples of ancient houses tipical of Tuscan called “Leopoldine” built for the grand duke Leopoldo
WHAT TO DO?
There are many events which animate the village in various period of the year.
In June there are two important event the first is the Palio della Rivarsa where the districts of the village fight for win. The game is to run with a vase on the stretcher and don't make it fall until three rounds the first who arrive can start to climb a pole full of greasy, the first that arrive up and extinguish the fire won; the other event is the Valle del Gigante Bianco (who is the cow Chianina) which celebrate the value of this animal and tell the story from the past to the present. It's possibile to try original dishes tipical of this land.

WHERE TO SLEEP?
Near the church there is a liberty palace where are two wonderful and confortable holidays rooms for visitors with the name Garibaldi. The rooms are furnished respecting the liberty stile one of this has a private terrace which has a view of the sorrounding area. It's the occasion to stay few days in Bettolle and try to live as his inhabitants which work and live like was a little village of eight hundred century

If you want to have a delicious lunch with genuin products of this land the best restaurant in this area is Walter Raedellli which offers you every day seasonal dishes and the chef create it in original mode and elegance. The restaurant is in a strategic position on the Valdichiana from that you have a panoramic view of the sourrounding land.
WHERE TO BUY SOMETHING?
Near the restaurant there is also a mill where the owners works the grain respecting the nature and without chemical adds. They produce various flours all biological from the 00, to the whole wheat flour, to the flour from grain “Verna” and also product for vegetarian or who has intollerances like spelt flour. The mill is called Molino Valdichiana.
