TOWNS NEAR AREZZO: FOIANO DELLA CHIANA

Let's continue to the travel through the Valdichiana.
Today I'll stop you in another little village.

HISTORY
The village was lived  from the IV century B.C. when the etruscan occupied this land until the coming of roman empire. Unfortunately with the deviation of the ancient river of Clanis (dried up) on the water of Arno the valley soon became a swamp and all the area was abandoned.
During the medieval age the city was dominated by Siena, Arezzo and at the end from Florence who decided to build the wall to defend the city from the revenge of the other cities.
Because of the swamp the florentines built a port, indeed the other villages, as Castiglion Aretino (today Castiglion Fiorentino) or Cortona, could be reached only by  boats.
In 1387 Foiano became a free municipality.
The reclamation operations started in XVI century ordered by Pietro Leopoldo di Lorena, the man who directed the works was Vittorio Fossombroni. This operation turned the valley in a fertile land especially for the grain and the cattle.
The village was partially destroyed during the second world war from the german army.

WHAT TO VISIT?
Starting from the roman domination there is a water tank outside of the village. This tank is dating to the late repubblican age and has a quadrangular shaped with a column in the center.
Continuing with the medieval age is interesting to visit the renaissance church of Santa Trinità, the facade is simple but inside is armonious  with three seventeenth-century altars, the bigger has a painting of a local famous painter called Pomarancio.
Another interesting church is the San Michele Arcangelo (XV century) with beautiful bell tower, inside there are some artworks of Della Robbia family and one of this is the Madonna del Rosario of Lorenzo Lippi.
The main church of Foiano is Collegiata di Santi Martino e Leonardo of the XVI century. The facade is simple with bricks. In the church are conserved some beautiful painting as the Incoronazione della Vergine of Luca Signorelli and the altarpiece of Andrea della Robbia.
You can visit also the high square where is the bell tower of the village. In the center of the place there is a fallen monument, on the right there is the municipal building (XIV century) and on the left the Granducal palace built for Ferdinando II of Medici as hunting residence.
If you would like to visit something of the second world war there is an english war cimitery in the locality Renzino.

First of all in February there is the famous and ancient Carnival where four districts challenge with each Carnival floats and are judged from a critical jury which every year decide which every yeare decide who won. This event is celebrated from 1539.

With the coming of spring season the village organise two days of a Flower party where the florists of the area show their flowers transforming the village in a colourful garden.

After arrive the Easter that here is celebrated in a special mode. On the saturday night after the Jesus death celebrated on the Collegiata the doors of the church are closed and a group of people arrive running after three knocks to the door, they bring the statue of Risen Christ.
The sunday of Easter all the town meets to the Collegiata and after the religious celebration there is a procession where the statue is brought with the band sound and outbreak of Castagnole ( are similar to firecrackers but bigger).

At the end in Autumn exactly few days before Halloween party there is the Pumpkin party, in this occasion the farmers bring their pumpkins and there is a challenge of weight.

WHERE TO SLEEP?
If you want to stay few days sourrounded by quite and green my tip is to book to Conca d'Oro. It's a little nice dependance in the heart of the countryside where you can feel the bird singing and silence.
It's few far from the center but near to the main roads for reach easily other places.

WHERE TO BUY SOMETHING?
Near to the exit of A1 direction of Foiano there is the Outlet Village where are many shops of clothes, books and more. In July generally there is a celebration with famous singers.
If you like buying some meat especially Chianina my tip is to going to the best butcher of the town near to the outlet village few meters before called Azienda Agricola Fierli.
