SINALUNGA

How can we talk about Bettole and don't tell you about Sinalunga?

HISTORY
The man in Sinalunga is present from the preistoric age. How about the etruscan period there is an important archeologist from Arezzo Gamurrini who described to have found some etruscan graves on the hills around Sinalunga. Recently excavations confirmed this, indeed was found the necropolis of San Giustino, it's composed on room graves which are attested to the VI century B.C. There are also other finds in the medieval church San Pietro ad Mensulas.
After lived there romans from I century B.C., one of the settlement found of the repubblican period was an important coaching inn on the via Cassia probably situated in the area of the medieval church Pieve di San Pierto.
Also this land was hit from rising the swamp and the people from Sinalunga refuge on the medieval castle on the hill top. The famous lords owners of this land are Cacciaconti. In 1303 born the free municipality of Sinalunga. The army of Carlo V entered here and took in few days some castles like Sinalunga used as a prison.
There is a part of the village of Sinalunga called Pieve di Sinalunga that is on the valley who take the name from the church Pieve di San Pietro ad Mensulas .


WHAT TO VISIT?
First of all is necessary to visit the Pieve di San Pietro ad Mensulas one of the six churches most important in the area under the diocese of Siena. It's a romanic building inside there is a roman  funerary inscription  dedicated to the son of Umbricius Clemens who was a praetorian knight.
Continuing to the center of the village from a steep climb you can find the Collegiata di San Martino, the main church of Sinalunga. It's dating on fivehundred century, the facade has a light color and near there is also the tower bell.
It's a very nice medieval village with narrow streets where is the beautiful praetorian palace with the high bell tower was built in 1337. It' was the headquarters of the civil authority. On the principal facade there are many coats of arms of the various lord who governed Sinalunga as Medici and the Republic of Siena. Interesting is the ancient pillory.
The village of Sinalunga has also a very nice theatre, little but refined with many events and theatral exibitions.
Continuing to high hill there is the convent di San Bernardino built in 1449 for the doctor Mariano Sozzini dedicated to Maria Annunziata. In the convent lived an important priest of the 1460 Pietro Fratangioli. The church was restaured in baroque stile and after in neoclassic. The facade is on stone with a porch with archs. Inside there are some importants chapels dedicated to Jesus, San Francesco and Maria but the most important is the chapel Madonna del Rifugio rebuilt in neo-renaissaince with the venerated icone for San Pietro, there are also many art works really important and well done.
Not far from here there is an important farm called l'Amorosa, it was built in medieval age and is a little village very cute in a land prosperous and magic. Today it's an holiday farm but there is also a good restaurant, little expensive but the chef is renomated and much valuable.



WHAT TO DO?

In autumn there is a big market to the Pieve Vecchia where all the villagers find and buy tipical things from the local producers, there is also a luna park.
In november there is La Corsa dei Carretti, it's a game where the villagers challenge with  four districts on a carts racer built on wood and they make the big downhill of Sinalunga.
